How to Reduce Facial Swelling

by John Molina 24 Feb 2022

We see ourselves everyday, so it’s easy to notice even the slightest of facial swelling that might otherwise go undetected by others. But don’t let it bother you too much. It happens to everyone, and you can easily alleviate it when you follow the right steps. Here is your easy guide to reducing facial swelling.

Reduce Sodium Intake

Excessively salty foods can cause facial swelling as well as puffy under eyes. This can also occur after a night of drinking alcohol and late-night partying. The swelling may be more severe when you’re unaccustomed to the foods or drinks that may have caused the problem in the first place. Regardless, use this as an opportunity to take note of what seems to irritate your skin and body as a whole. In the future, try to avoid these products as much as possible, and use your day of swelling recovery to eat low-sodium, healthy meals and drink lots of pure water.

Stay Hydrated

After you’ve eaten or drank something that your body doesn’t agree with, the best thing you can do is drink lots of water. The extra hydration will ensure that your body quickly flushes out any irritants and toxins that caused the inflammation. And your skin loves water, so staying hydrated will help keep it plump and youthful as well.

Apply Cold Products

Cold towel compresses and ice rollers are a great way to shock the skin into reducing swelling, the same way you would if you sprained an ankle or wrist. You can also stick spoons in the freezer for a bit and use them under the eyes to depuff them. These are great tricks you can even use on vacation if you wake up with any swelling!

Implement Skin Serums

As a precursor to the next step, you’ll want to hydrate your skin and make sure it’s prepped with proper product so that you’re not tugging at the already-irritated skin. Face serums are wonderfully potent products that provide instant hydration and relief while also being lightweight, meaning they’ll soak into the skin quickly and easily.

Try Face Rollers

There are plenty of different types of face rollers out on the market, such as small jade and rose quartz ones, larger metal rolling bars, and handheld tools with metal spheres at the end to gently massage the skin. Give your serums a few minutes to penetrate, then use a roller or gua sha of your choice, applying soft pressure in an upward direction, to help improve drainage and reduce swelling.

When you follow these simple yet effective steps, you’ll almost instantly begin to see the difference they make in removing any and all signs of swelling and irritation from the face. Now that you know these tips, you can use them as part of your daily routine or just use them when you need to most. Your skin will always be ready to take on the day (or night) when you treat it right.
