The Importance of Cold-Weather Skin Protection

The summer heat brings with it skincare issues such as sunburn, sweat-induced breakouts, and excessive oil production due to humidity. So some may think winter is much easier on your complexion. While it’s true that no season has to define your skin’s health as long as you adjust your routine accordingly, it’s also essential to know some of the dangers of not protecting your skin when it gets cooler outside.

Here are just a few of the reasons you need to take winter skincare precautions as well as how you can actively take steps toward achieving your best skin during the chilly season.

  1. The Sun is Still Strong

Do not underestimate the power of the sun’s rays. While sunburn is mostly commonly associated with spring and especially summer, it’s still out on the dreariest day. In fact, overcast days are some of the most notorious for leading to skin damage because most people think they’re in the clear and don’t need to apply sunscreen. However, your skin needs proper protection through the daily use of SPF as well as a skincare routine that incorporates protective ingredients. Even the faintest daylight can reflect off the snowy ground and directly hit your face. So take caution and protect the skin with products made with the likes of zinc, niacinamide, and vitamin C.

  1. The wind can burn the skin
Even if the sun is less powerful on a winter day with a lower UV index, you must always remain mindful of the wind. Just as you would check the weather each morning, you should check to see how strong the wind will be since windburn is a very real threat, particularly in the winter. By moisturizing daily, you’ll provide a protective barrier that also locks in hydration; without it, dry skin would just become further irritated. Other helpful skincare ingredients to look out for that provide protection and healing are zinc, niacinamide, aloe vera, vitamin B, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

  2. Overexposure can chap & crack the skin

If you’re a snow-lover who can’t wait to get outside during the cold season, you don’t have to skip any hikes or snow-shoeing on behalf of your skin. Just take into consideration the amount of time you’ll spend exposed to the cooler elements, and adjust your care routine accordingly. Drink lots of water, incorporate hydrating face masks, use a good toner to rebalance the skin, moisturize the face and body, and wear plenty of SPF. However, if you’re outside without proper attire or skin protection, be mindful of how long you stay out; even 30 minutes of sun reflecting off the snow or gusts of wind across your cheeks can lead to dry skin chapping and cracking.

Don’t forget that it’s one of the most wonderful times of the year, and you don’t need to let dry or damaged skin slow you down when there is so much to enjoy. Whether your geographical region experiences mild or severe seasonal changes during this time of year, the best thing you can do is arm yourself with knowledge so that you can update your lifestyle accordingly; grab all of your warmest clothing layers, up your water intake, and update your skincare routine with hydrating and protecting products for the best results. By taking preventative action now, you’ll get to comfortably enjoy the best the season has to offer with the ones you love.
