Red Skin Solutions
Calming redness
Redness-prone skin tends to be sensitive, and is more likely to react to any number of environmental factors, including sun, wind and harsh temperatures, as well as ingredients commonly found in some cosmetic and skincare products. With a little extra care and attention, however, you can learn how to soothe red skin and attain skin that is calm, healthy and luminous.
How to get rid of red skin:
- Know your skin’s triggers and be vigilant to avoid products which contain them. Before purchasing any new product, check the ingredients list for common irritants such as alcohol, sulfates and petrochemicals.
- Avoid synthetic chemicals and added fragrance. This may seem obvious, but unless you read your product labels, you may be unknowingly applying irritating chemicals to your sensitive skin. Fragrance is an especially sensitizing ingredient for many sensitive skin types. There are no labeling requirements for what goes into what is called “fragrance” on packaging, and many synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics and skincare can have as many as 200 ingredients each.
- Remember that even well formulated products can cause a reaction. Retinol, for example, is a fantastic ingredient which conveys an astonishing array of scientifically proven benefits, but it is not tolerated by 100% of all skin types. Some sensitive skin types can experience temporary redness and irritation which will subside as their skin adjusts to the product – for others it is just not the best solution for their skin. Similarly, glycolic acid has few peers when it comes to exfoliating and renewing skin, but a glycolic acid peel is not appropriate for redness-prone skin.
- When introducing a new product, be cautious. Do a patch test first, by applying a small amount behind the ear and leaving it on overnight. If no irritation or redness occurs, you should be able to safely introduce the product into your regimen.
- Choose products with natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients. Redness is often a sign of inflammation. Green tea, aloe vera, borage, Vitamin C, chamomile, licorice and evening primrose are among the anti-inflammatory ingredients that we use in OZNaturals products. An anti-redness regimen rich in these antioxidants could include our Vitamin C Cleanser, Vitamin C Serum, Sea Infused Moisturizerand soothing Vitamin C + Sea Hydration Mask.
- Always use sunscreen. This is an important beauty tip for all skin types, but it is especially vital for sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is highly reactive to sunlight. A broad spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 is a must – every day, regardless of the weather or time of year. Sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are ideal for redness-prone skin. Our zinc-oxide based Age Defying Tinted Sunscreenalso gives a hint of color to help disguise redness.
- Make healthier eating choices. Newer studies are showing that many skin conditions may be the result of a poor diet, causing some to have more reactive or sensitive skin. Consuming a diet with more vegetables, lean protein, and fresh water could also help with redness and sensitive skin issues. Avoiding processed foods, alcohol, too much caffeine, and sugar can make a big difference with your skin’s appearance.
