You have: Oily Skin

The amount of oil our skin produces is controlled by hormones called androgens. These are often thought of as male hormones, although both men and women have them. While men’s skin tends to be oiler in general than female skin, members of both sexes commonly suffer from oily skin and the subsequent problems that can cause.

There are many potential causes for oily skin. If you’ve always had oily skin, and other members of your family do as well, it may be a genetic trait. A change in medications such as birth control pills, or hormone replacement medications can also trigger excess oil production. Stress, environmental factors and, incorrect use of skin care products may also be at fault.

Regardless of the cause, a proactive skincare routine is an important step in caring for oily skin. The basic steps of cleansing, toning, exfoliation, hydration and sun protection are all key to the good health of all skin types, but are especially vital for managing oily skin. Below are some “do’s and don’ts” for gaining the upper hand on your oily skin this summer.

  • Use a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser morning and evening. Harsh cleansers can temporarily dry out skin, but they end up triggering more oil production, causing a vicious cycle. OZNaturals Ocean Mineral Cleanser cleans gently but deeply, and unclogs pores without stripping skin.
  • Exfoliate regularly. Oily skin builds up dead skin cells at a faster rate, clogging pores and causing blackheads. Our Ancient Enzyme Dermafoliant effectively rids the skin surface of unwanted dead skin cells without irritation.
  • Hydrate skin with a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer. It’s a mistake to think that oily skin does not require moisturization. A lightweight moisturizer such as OZNaturals Sea Infused Moisturizer protects the skin by providing antioxidants and skin repairing ingredients, without adding to oil production.

  • Scrub aggressively. Over-zealous use of scrubs, cleansing brushes and pore strips backfires by causing irritation which – of course – causes more oil production.
  • Use alcohol based toners, which are also a major source of irritation. Unfortunately, many toners marketed for oily skin fit this profile, and do more harm than good. OZNaturals Ocean Mineral Tonic is alcohol-free and enriched with organic sulfur and Vitamin C, to help nourish and heal skin, and allow nutrients to move in and out.
  • Tan. Many people erroneously think that sun exposure will help dry out oily skin. Unfortunately, the opposite may occur as the UV radiation triggers an injury response and causes sebaceous glands to increase production of oil. Because oily skin is just as susceptible to sun damage as other skin types, it requires broad spectrum 30 SPF protection daily. A mineral- based sunscreen in a non-greasy formulation, such as our Age Defying Solar Shield can protect skin without adding shine.

Oily skin can be frustrating to live with and get under control, especially during warmer weather. A consistent, gentle approach using the appropriate products will have you sailing through every season, looking and feeling your best.

You have: Combination Skin

Although it is among the most common skin types, combination skin can often be the most challenging to deal with.

Combination skin occurs when some areas of the face have different oil production and moisture levels than others. Most commonly, the “T-zone,” comprised of the nose, chin and forehead, is oilier and more prone to breakouts than the cheek and eye area, which can be normal or dry. Pores on the nose area can appear enlarged, while patches on the cheeks can be taut and even flaky.

Taking care of combination skin can sometimes seem like walking a tightrope between exacerbating the oily areas and irritating the dry patches. Using products that are too harsh or too emollient can make the situation worse. The key is to create a consistent skincare regimen using well-chosen products appropriate for this skin type.

Using a mild, sulfate-free cleanser is an important first step. While it may be tempting to aggressively scrub away oil and blackheads in the T-zone, using a harsh cleanser or scrubbing too much can actually increase oil production in the areas where you want it least, while seriously drying out skin in other parts of the face. Avoid bar soaps, which manage to simultaneously clog pores and exacerbate dryness. Both our Ocean Mineral Cleanser and Vitamin C Cleanser are good choices for combination skin since they gently unclog pores and cleanse deeply without stripping the skin of moisture.

Using a non-alcohol toner twice a day can also help keep combination skin in peak health. The organic sulfur and glycolic acid in our Ocean Mineral Tonic can help oily areas by penetrating the pores and encouraging skin cell turnover while the amino acids, ocean minerals and plant extracts soothe and heal dry skin.

Proper exfoliation is another step that can yield huge payoffs for combination skin. As with cleansing, exfoliating too harshly can stimulate oil production in the T-zone area. Using our Ancient Orient Dermafoliant twice a week in the shower removes dead skin cells which can cause dullness and allow all your skincare products to work more effectively.

Vitamin C and Retinol are two skincare ingredients that can address a wide variety of skincare complaints and are well-tolerated by combination skin. Incorporating serums into your skincare regimen can yield visible improvement in a relatively short period of time. Our Vitamin C Serum protects skin from free radical damage and brightens and improves skin tone. Our Retinol Serum can reduce the appearance of pore size while building collagen and creating luminosity and glow.

Choosing a moisturizer is probably the area where those with combination skin have the most trouble. A moisturizer that is too rich can cause excess shine and oil, yet forgoing moisturizer is never a good option either. A lightweight, easily absorbed moisturizer that is rich in antioxidants is the best choice for combination skin. OZNaturals Sea Infused Moisturizer is a good choice for combination skin types, since it strikes the right balance of protecting skin while delivering a range of active ingredients, such as Vitamin C, that improve skin health.

Creating a skincare routine for combination skin doesn’t have to be an insurmountable challenge. At OZNaturals, we understand this common but complex skin type and have a range of products to optimize combination skin health.

You have: Dry Skin

Most dry skin conditions happen because the outer layers of the skin have lost their ability to retain moisture. There are some tried and true steps you can take to repair that barrier.

  • Add moisture from the inside out. Your skin is about 30% water, so proper hydration is essential for its health, and even more so when it is dry or stressed. Drinking dehydrating beverages such as coffee and alcohol can make the problem worse. Consuming lots of pure water is your best bet.
  • Long exposure to water from showers or baths, however, will have a negative effect. Keep water lukewarm, not hot, and limit your time in the shower or bath.
  • Choose a gentle cleanser. Harsh cleansers are one of the biggest culprits when it comes to dry skin. Use a gentle cleanser, such as our Vitamin C Facial Cleanser, which is sulfate-free and anti-oxidant rich. Avoid any skincare products that contain irritating or drying ingredients such as alcohol or added fragrances.
  • Exfoliate. Dry skin often looks and feels even worse because the top layers of dead skin cells are blocking healthy new skin cells from the surface. A gentle exfoliant such as our Ancient Orient Rice Dermafoliant, used at least twice a week, will help correct this problem.
  • Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. There’s no excuse for not applying a well-formulated moisturizer every morning and evening. For added benefit, use OZNaturals Hyaluronic Acid Serum first. It’s a super hydrator that plumps the skin and retains 1000 times its weight in water. Following up with our Super Youth Retinol Moisturizer will deliver even more Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin E to make dry skin smooth and supple.
  • Use a hydrating mask for an extra boost. Our Amino Herbal Hydration Mask is a secret weapon for severely dry skin. Gentle botanicals and aloe bathe the skin in moisture and anti-oxidants. Try using the mask daily for a week for a noticeable improvement in hydration.
  • Always use sunscreen. Sun exposure is damaging and makes your skin less able to hold water. A mineral-based SPF30 sunscreen every day is a must. Our Age Defying Solar Shield Tinted Sunscreen provides great protection in a highly moisturizing formulation.
  • Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep stresses every organ of the body, and that also goes for your skin.
  • Exercise. Exercise not only helps to keep us in shape, but it also helps to keep the body functioning properly. This means it can help keep your hormones and thyroid in balance, which in turn will keep the body’s oil production more balanced. A sedentary lifestyle is never good for the skin.

You have: Normal Skin

You are one of the lucky ones. Normal skin is neither dry nor oily, and it’s not difficult, costly, or confusing to get great results from a relatively simple skin care regimen. A few minutes, twice a day really is all that is needed for glowing, healthy skin. Consistency, however, is very important. While many products, including OZNaturals, will yield immediate subtle improvements in skin tone and resiliency, the biggest benefits come with regular, long-term usage.

So what comprises a good skin care regimen?

If you’re in your 20’s or younger, and have absolutely no skin issues, you may be able to get away with a very minimalist routine: a good cleanser and moisturizer, morning and night, and a high SPF natural sunscreen every day. That’s not to say your skin wouldn’t benefit from a good toner and serum, but if you’re religious about the sunscreen, you’re at least covering the most important base.

As our skin ages, (especially if we skipped that sunscreen in our 20s!) there are several additional steps that will make a noticeable difference:

Toner is a quick and simple addition to any skin care routine that can reap amazing results. A good toner can deliver antioxidants and other skin perfecting ingredients, prep skin, and increase the efficacy of the serums and moisturizers that are applied afterward. OZNaturals Ocean Mineral Tonic boosts all skin types with Vitamin C, glycolic acid, and organic sulfur.

A Vitamin C Serum is the next step I recommend in an effective beauty regimen. This powerful antioxidant not only protects skin against free radicals, but also helps repair skin that may have already suffered damage. Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin and give it at least five minutes to absorb. OZNaturals Vitamin C Serum contains 20% stabilized Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, the highest concentration available. In fact, SAP is activated once it is absorbed by the skin, and continues to stay active for more than 24 hours after application! This is an amazing characteristic of this particular form of Vitamin C, and it’s what makes SAP so extraordinary!

Normal skin types can benefit from a Hyaluronic Acid Serum. HA draws water into the skin, restoring elasticity, diminishing fine lines and naturally balancing moisture levels. Apply OZNaturals Hyaluronic Acid Serum in the evening (after the Vitamin C serum), and allow it to dry before moving on to your moisturizer.

Using a moisturizer with retinol is an extremely beneficial step for anyone concerned about keeping skin as youthful as possible. This form of Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant, and one of the most thoroughly researched skin care ingredients available. OZNaturals Super Youth 2.5% Retinol Moisturizer contains retinyl palmitate, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E to deliver a powerful and effective cocktail of anti-aging treatments. You should be using sunscreen already, but daily use is a must with any retinol product.

The delicate area around the eyes can also benefit from regular care. Even normal skin types can suffer from puffiness, bags, dark circles, and wrinkles. All these common complaints which can be addressed with OZ Natural’s Super Youth Eye Gel. Formulated to be used day and night, this versatile product also serves as a wonderful primer for eye makeup.

Your beauty ritual can be as unique as you are. The key is to select high quality products, with active ingredients that address the skin issues that concern you. Choose wisely, be consistent, and you’ll be rewarded with more beautiful, healthy skin.

One final tip: Whichever products you use on your face, remember to also apply to your neck and even the backs of your hands. These often neglected areas can be among the first places to show signs of aging, and will greatly benefit from the same skin care steps that you take with that beautiful face!
